Aperture Science Birthday Celebration Enhancement Device

Companion Cube at the Desk

Please assume the party escort submission position.

On Tuesday I'm going to turn 25.  I hadn't really thought that much about it.  I'd done almost no planning for it whatsoever.  On the other hand, it seems that Jenna has been thinking about my birthday a good bit.  To be more precise, she's been planning for almost two full months.  She came over yesterday so that we could go out to eat.  Just before we left, she brought in the first of two presents from her car.  Unwrapping it revealed a copy of "Lego Batman" and a note that read "I promise to play this game with you for at least ten minutes."  She knew that would be my first question.  :P

As if that weren't enough, it seems that Jenna had come up with one more present: a weighted companion cube.  Over the last two months, she hand sewed and stuffed a giant weighted companion cube (see picture.)

The cube is huge and looks even more awesome in person.  Also, the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.  I love it!  Jenna constantly amazes me.  I don't know how she does it.

Half-Life 2 Episode 3

Good news everyone!  According to Valve CEO Gabe Newell, Half-Life 2 Episode 3 is still in the works.  I guess they haven't forgot about us!  Oh, and this one might have something not usually seen in gaming: characters using sign language.  Things are looking awesome again.

Braid

I love the idea of time manipulation.  Something about traveling forward, backward, fast or slow through time just intrigues me.  I can only suspect that the makers of Braid knew this bit of information about me when they designed their game.  I would try to explain it to you...  Instead, I'll just attach the trailer.  When I get several hours of free time and $15, I can assure you that this will make it off of my wish list.

Black Mesa Source

Stop for a moment. Try and remember the year 1998. What do you come up with? Personally, the first thing that I come up with (apart from getting ready to panic over Y2K) is entering 7th grade. Just barely over ten years ago. That's just me.

If you happen to be a gamer obsessed with the Half-Life series (one of which PC Gamer called "The Best Game Ever Made.") then you also might remember it as being the year that "Half Life" came out. You knew it sounded familiar didn't you? ;) The fact that VALVe re-released much of the series in the "The Orange Box" should be an indicator that it was very well received. To be more exact, Metacritic gave it a 96/100. Yeah, very well received.

Unfortunately, the same year that brought us the concept of Half-Life did not bring us amazing graphics and enough horsepower to make the game feel real. If only it had been made today. Enter "Black Mesa: Source."

"Black Mesa" is a total conversion mod created by scores of developers, voice actors, artists, musicians, and level designers. According to their website, "Black Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Half-Life: Source was inadequate as the Source engine port of Half-Life, regardless of the intentions of VALVe Software. As such, Black Mesa was founded to fully reconstruct the Half-Life universe utilizing Source to its fullest potential in terms of art detail, level sizes and code features." Well that's great. Sounds nice, but can they deliver? If you watched the video, then you probably agree: yes they can. Final release is slated for sometime in 2009.

(If you had no idea what a first person shooter felt like in 1998, then check out this trailer for the original "Half Life.")
